Department of TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages), previously known as Department of TCAFL (Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language) was founded in 1985. It is one of several long-standing composite degree programs in Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), which is also one of the four earliest universities in China to offer this undergraduate major.
The B.S. program in Educational Technology is a comprehensive international program approved by the Ministry of Education in 1986. The goal of the program is to cultivate international compound talents with good ideological and moral qualities, solid knowledge of educational technology, strong performance analysis, curriculum development, and instructional teaching (training) design, educational resource development and management, as well as essential English language skills.
The B.A. program in English Language Teaching (ELT) is characterized by the integration of English language learning and educational studies. It emphasizes interdisciplinary teaching and research. By taking courses in both English language and literature and educational theories and practice, students are expected to achieve an advanced level of English proficiency, develop a solid foundation in liberal arts, and master various theories and skills regarding educational practice. Our graduates are excellent candidates for professions in the field of education and culture.
Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2009, the B.A. program in Business English at Shanghai International Studies University aims at training future business leaders with excellent English language skills and a holistic range of knowledge and skills in the fields of business and commerce. Students in the program are required to acquire not only solid intercultural communication skills, but also the necessary expertise in international business and the humanities. Graduates can satisfy the needs of government agencies, international organizations, multinational corporations, and other enterprises, and communicate effectively in business activities.
The program (since 1997) cultivates application-oriented talents and future researchers in the fields of educational technology and performance technology. It remains at a leading position nationwide in the following four research areas: performance technology and training, instructional design and development, technology enhanced foreign language education, and new media for learning application. The teachers and students are responsible for the central research activities of the International Comparative Studies Center for ICT in Education and in charge of MOOC related duties. The two MOOCs “Intercultural Communication” and “Communicative Chinese”, launched on the FutureLearn platform, were produced by the ICT center and have exerted great international influence.
The Curriculum and Instruction Program aims at training future researchers and educators in theories of curriculum, innovative teaching and evaluation, teachers’ professional development, and students’ learning with the goals of providing counselling, assisting in educational policy formation, and practicing teaching themselves. It serves the curriculum reform of both theory and practice across the whole country.
The Master’s Program in Comparative and International Education (CIE) provides a strong theoretical and empirical base for studying comparative and international education in a rapidly changing global context. The program enables students to learn the core concepts, scientific perspectives, and methodologies in comparative education. Through its training and research activities, students can develop a better understanding of the status quo and developmental trend of global education.
The Center for Comparative Study of Global Education was founded at Shanghai International Studies University on April 23, 2019. At the same time, a strategic cooperation agreement was signed with the Education Management Information Center of the Ministry of Education. Led by the School of Education, the center integrates the multilingual education resources of SISU and organically combines education with languages to jointly cultivate professionals of “multilingual plus education” to carry out comparative education research. It aims to cultivate “multilingual + education” professionals, who will put into practice the mission, Serving the needs of our nation, to advance social progress, and to promote heart-to-heart communication between China and the rest of the world,” and contribute to China’s education reform and development.
The International Comparative Studies Center for ICT in Education was founded on April 15, 2015. The Center is jointly established by the Education Management Information Center of the Ministry of Education and Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). The Vice President of SISU acts as the Director, and the Chief Editor of the Chinese Journal of ICT in Education and Dean of the School of Education, SISU, acts as the Deputy Director.
